Summary Description:
Under general supervision, provides instructional support services by performing technical work in environmental science laboratory; orders, issues, prepares, and maintains laboratory materials, supplies, and associated equipment; performs related duties as required.

Positions in the Laboratory Technician class are assigned duties requiring considerable technical knowledge and ability in the assigned field of specialization. Incumbents are expected to exercise independent judgment in the performance of duties and are responsible for supervising and maintaining all laboratory supplies, materials, equipment, and records. Positions in this class specialize in the assigned subject area.

Minimum Requirements:
Education/Training:
Equivalent to completion of 60 semester units of college level coursework that includes a minimum of 18 semester units in environmental science-related coursework. Courses may include but are not limited to ecology; environmental science; geology; geography; oceanography; atmospheric science, biogeography; climatology; soil science; and general, organic and environmental chemistry.

Experience:
Some experience as a laboratory technician in the appropriate subject field.

Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of:
1. Course content, equipment, safety and other procedures, supplies, and reference materials related to the appropriate science laboratory.
2. Methods and procedures of preparing instructional materials used in appropriate laboratory.
3. Techniques and protocols for the care, collection and preservation of laboratory collections.
4. Mathematics skill to make calculations such as metric weights and volumes, percents, and molar solutions.
5. Sufficient human relation skills to guide students and student workers, and to convey technical concepts.
6. Operational characteristics of laboratory apparatus, equipment, and materials pertaining to assigned laboratory and subject area.
7. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices including methods and techniques used in handling hazardous chemicals and biohazardous waste.
8. Principles and procedures of record keeping and filing.
9. Basic inventory and purchasing processes and procedures.
10. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.


Ability to:
1. Set up, modify, service, adjust, and make minor repairs to laboratory apparatus and equipment.
2. Prepare chemical and reagent solutions, extracts, and dilutions to specifications.
3. Prepare instructional equipment and specimens for laboratory exercises.
4. Operate, calibrate, and perform minor troubleshooting and repair of laboratory and office equipment and tools.
5. Maintain the lab and equipment in a safe and organized manner including the handling of hazardous or dangerous materials and equipment as required for some labs.
6. Observe safety procedures and protocols, including those for safe handling and storage of hazardous materials.
7. Read and understand technical manuals and protocols.
8. Provide assistance to students in the use of lab equipment and lab procedures.
9. Listen actively and effectively, identify and solve problems, and facilitate problem solving.
10. Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing applications.
11. Perform routine record keeping and report writing duties.
12. Work independently and collaboratively.
13. Plan and organize work to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
14. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
15. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary range of $1,591.25 to $1,934.68 per month (47.5% of contract) prorated to 222 service days plus APPLE retirement (employee contributes 6.2%); CSEA union (dues are 1.5% up to a maximum of $36.75 per month).

Examples of Duties:
1. Sets up and prepares class demonstrations and experiments working from knowledge of the subject area, reference materials, course outline, and without specific instructions.
2. Inventories, orders, receives, and stocks materials, supplies, and equipment for laboratory use.
3. Orders, receives, organizes, and provides care for laboratory collections in environmental science.
4. Issues and maintains records on materials loaned to students, instructors, and other departments.
5. Demonstrates and assists students in proper use and care of laboratory materials and equipment; assists in maintaining security of laboratories, laboratory equipment, supplies, and materials.
6. Prepares and dispenses solutions, and chemical materials used for lab classes which may include reagents, chemicals, acids, bases, buffers, stains and unknowns.
7. Prepares and performs analyses on reagents and a variety of known and unknown chemical compounds.
8. Cleans up after each lab session by washing, and if necessary, sterilizing tools, equipment, and supplies.
9. Calibrates, maintains, and performs repairs on scientific equipment and supplies.
10. Monitors production of, collects, and processes hazardous waste materials and toxic chemicals materials resulting from lab classes; collects and properly stores biohazard waste.
11. May assist faculty in assembling printed class materials.
12. May supervise and assign work of student assistants.
13. May maintain expenditure records and provide data for budget estimates.
14. Performs related duties as required.

Working Hours:
19 hours per week. Primary working hours are during the late afternoon and evening hours Monday through Thursday. Some Fridays may be required.

Hours assigned may vary depending upon the needs of the District.

Initial assignment is at Crafton Hills College, but the District reserves the right to transfer an employee from one location to another.
